My partner and I will be driving from Melbourne to Rockhampton next month with our 14 month old daughter.

I'm kinda stressing about it, well not kinda, totally!! Although it's only a one way trip, so it's half okay. Heh.

Anyone who has done something like this, could you please help with a few pointers that might help us make the trip more pleasant.

Any ideas would be greatul, thanks!!

  1. if you travel inland you miss out on all that lovely sydney traffic! a lot of great little towns to stop at.

  2. All i can advise is don't drive after dusk, the Kangaroos like to eat on the side of the road and if you hit one of them you are going to make a big mess of your car and possibly yourselves.

  3. oh god.. lol when i was younger we drove from brisbane to rocky.. worst trip ever lol thre kids a mum and dad.. lol all i can say is stop for food .. reguarly hehe

  4. We have driven from Junee NSW to Bribie Island QLD with two kids under three and we made sure we did most of our travels at night so the kids would sleep. We took the Newell Hwy all the way up to Goondoowindi and then across to Brissie with a night stop over in Dubbo. If I was going Melb to Rocky, I would probably stay at West Wyalong and Brisbane on the way to Rocky. A good cheap portable DVD player also helps keep the kids occupied. A bit of wiggles isn't too bad to put up with if your child is staying quiet. Also, alot of stop for a walk will help too.

  5. Hello. I have done this run 4 times but i had to go to Gladstone. My son when he first came was 2. I found the best time to drive when he was sleeping so i would drive all night and crash out in the day time but also on one trip i did straight. You are looking 26 hours. 14 months old well your daughter would just sleep and sit in the back when she is awake. Just keep her happy. Nothing i say will make it easy as it is breaking your daughters routine if you know what i mean but if she is good in the car drive as much as you can and get there quick. Good luck and i hope everything goes well and becareful on the road as the trucks are the worst on the highways these days. :)
