Question:

Driving from Toronto to Vancouver without entering US?

I'm moving from Toronto to BC and have to plan my cross country trip.

All the online route planning tools I've been able to track down suggest a route that goes through the US.

Because I'll be driving a truck with all my belongings (including my cat), it's probably easier to not cross the border (twice). Can someone suggest the quickest route to get from Toronto to Vancouver without crossing into the US? How much longer is this trip than if I were to go south of the Great Lakes and across the US?

  1. You can go through Detroit or the Souix

Either will save you time and Gas and with the exchange cheaper.

The trans Canada is desolate and boring around the lakehead.

Mapquest will give you the best route and save you 300 miles

For example if you were in Windsor which way would one go?

Any mapquest I have seen always indicants a route from T.O. to Vancouver through the U.S

Gas is $150 a liter on the trans canada --$600 a gallon as opposed to $420 a gallon in the us.

If you use150 gallons on your trip--well --close to $200.00 saved and motels in the U.S are a lot cheaper and a bigger selection

  2. You'll save a day by going through the US, the roads are better, gas is cheaper, the cat shouldn't be a problem at either border especially if you take its vaccination papers. I crossed both ways with a cat I found along the way who had no papers. But if I were you, I think I'd go through Canada too, in case someone decides they want to inspect the contents of the truck. You'd be there for hours. I wouldn't even want to think about it. In that case, head north out of TO on the 400, it turns into 69, follow that to Sudbury, turn west there onto 17, stay on that to Vancouver, it turns into Hwy 1 at Kenora. And did I see your name as 'cortesbound' ? If that's where you're really going, just stay on Hwy 1 right through to Horseshoe Bay. Try to hit Vancouver around noon or after 7 pm because at most other times the freeway traffic can be awful heading into town, starting about 6:30 am. Welcome to northern Vancouver Island. I live not far from Campbell River

  3. Go north on the 400 to HWY 69 then  around Lake Superior then follow the trans Canada, CAA would be able to provide you with maps and routes.

  4. Take the trans Canada all the way through. Why would you drive into the US to get from Toronto to Van? That makes no sense.
