Driving from U.S. to Canada?!?

A "original " birth certificate or a "certified issued copy " of the US birth certificate is REQUIRED. A photo copy is USELESS.

So yes a "Real birth certificate " is REQUIRED to enter Canada. PLUS a photo ID such as a state issued driving licence.

In June of 2009, the rules will change, and a US passport will be the ONLY way to get into Canada, and more importantly, BACK  into the USA.

No, passports will not be needed for land travel to and from Canada until June 1, 2009...no matter what many people say.  Now, you must have a certified copy with the raised seal...obtained from the state office of vital records.  It cannot be just a photo copy.

Requirements for travel into Canada are technically not as strict as those for travel into the US.  However since you will have to return home to the US you would have to meet the requirements as set down by the US.

Presently for travel by land you require the following ID:

A valid Passport

OR

Government issued photo ID such as a driver's license and and official birth certificate so a photocopy, unless it is a certified copy, will not be acceptable.

I would look into getting an original birth certificate as soon as possible if you wish to cross the border unless you have a valid passport.  Note that as of June 1, 2009 you will require a Passport, Passport Card, Enhanced Drivers License, or a NEXUS (or similar) Card to cross the border.

ive gone to canada using my birth certificate last month so you can use your birth certificate and your i.d... i think a copy should be just fine.

When you enter Canada, a border services officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa, when necessary. If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada; however, you should carry proof of your citizenship such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization or a Certificate of Indian Status, as well as a photo ID. If you are a permanent resident of the United States, you must bring your permanent resident card (i.e. green card) with you.
