Driving from gold coast to hughenden?

with out going on long dirt roads, what is the best way to get from the gold coast to hughenden? i have 3 ways that i can find, via townsville, 22hours, via emerald 20hours, via winton 18hours. i dont know the road and i dont have a 4WD

  1. Any of the 3 routes you mention are all sealed, unless you 'short cut' from Barcaldine, Muttaburra, Hughenden on the Landsborough Hwy, which last time I was out there it was good gravel.) A lot of the western roads are a thin strip of bitumen, meaning you will need to go off the shoulder of the road for on-coming traffic. This is no big deal unless it is wet, when the 'black soil' at the edge of the road can become very slippery. If wet, suggest Longreach, Winton, Hughenden, or the longer coastal road.


  2. I would go to the R.A.C.Q.  web site.  They have a trip planner and lots of other things including road conditions.
