My question is a little different. what could be the penalty for a 20 year old driving (who has had a permit before and will be 21 in 2 weeks) but without one now in the car with another 21 year old who has a license and is driving across state lines? (Md to NY?)

  1. it doesn't matter how old you are, if you don't have a permit or a license, you shouldn't be driving.  even if you had a permit and it expired.

    the penalties could include:

    1.  A ticket, with a huge fine attached.

    2.  Suspension of driving privledges.  Meaning that you would not be able to apply for a new permit for so many years, depending on your state.  usually it is 3 or 4 years.

    3.  When you do eventually get your license and insurance, your insurance will by HIGH for a long time because of this.

    4.  The licensed driver could get into trouble as well for letting you drive the car.

    5.  the car could be impounded, and you'll have to pay to get it out.

the fines could be higher because you are out of state.  Keep in mind that Pa has higher fines than Md.  So if your going through there, which I assume you are because its between Md and Ny, be prepared to pay a pretty penny.

  2. Ticket, Fine, Complete Loss of license and possible jail time.

  3. I'm not quite sure how it works from state to state...but..it seems to me that...no matter how old you are...you can't drive legally on any roadway without a learners permit...regardless of how old you are...so...if you are driving on a roadway without a permit...then...you would be arrested for driving without a license.

The other 21 year old..should be the only one operating that vehicle.
