Driving in California.?

I've had my license for almost a year now, but my parents say they don't want me driving because I'm not insured.

The thing is, the car has insurance.. but does my name have to be on the insurance in order for me to drive? I'm going to be a senior in high school and i'll have alot of things going on like SAT classes and community service things.. and it would really help if i could actually drive myself. So yeah.. Does my name need to be on the insurance policy in order for me to drive the car?

  1. tricky answer.  the answer goes like this:

if you were to be pulled over, you would receive a citation for driving uninsured.  you would have the opportunity to go to court and and show them proof that you were insured on the day of the citation.

in this case, YES, you need insurance.

if you decided, whatever, im not gonna get pulled over, and didn't purchase insurance with your name on the policy.  you would STILL be covered by you parents policy unless they specifically excluded you.  the kicker is if you were to be involved in an accident, they would probobly drop your parents policy after the settlements.

  2. If the vehicle is insured in your parents name and you live in their household and you have a valid drivers license, you MUST be named on your parents insurance policy. Yes you will be insured when you drive any of your parents vehicles. If you DO NOT live in your parents household, you DO NOT need to be listed on their insurance policy and YES, you will be insured when you drive any of their vehicles.

  3. just get a job and pay for the d**n insurance lol, it would make it a lot easier for ya.

  4. You can drive but the car wont be covered if you get into a wreck!!!

  5. It depends on the insurance -

Is the car in your name?  You need insurance in your name unless you are not the primary driver.

Are you the primary driver? You need insurance in your name.

Do you live with the person the car belongs to? You need to be added to their policy with this car as your primary vehicle.

Are you borrowing the car? Then the insurance will cover you - but if the policy holder says you didn't have permission to drive it - your screwed!

  6. Yes, your name would have to be added to the insurance to be covered.  It should have been added (or excluded) when you first got your license.

  7. It depends on your particular insurance plan.  When I was younger I was automatically covered under my parents insurance however it was not my primary means of transportation.  I had my own car and my own insurance for it so if I drove their car every so often I was considered covered.
