Question:

Driving in LA with out of state car?

I'm new to LA and about to get a California driver's license. Here's the deal though, I'm borrowing my father's car, which is registered in Michigan and has Michigan plates. If I go to the DMV will they make me register the car in my name? And is it illegal to drive my father's car in California with Michigan plates? If the cops pull me over will they fine me for living in California, but driving a car registered in Michigan, even if I don't own the car?

Thanks!

Chris

  1. If you're residing in California (i.e., not visiting), then you need to get CA plates and a CA registration.  The title (ownership) is irrelevant.

  2. Think about it Chris.  As long as the car is legal and you have a driver's license, you can drive it in California.  Lots of Californians don't even have driver's licenses.
