Question:

Driving in Turkey?

Next week, we will be driving from Ankara to Urgup in Turkey. How is this route, and does anyone have any recommendations?

So far, my driving experience includes:

New Zealand - drive on left, nice roads, very safe

Virgin Islands - Drive on left, crazy driving, bad roads, steep cliffs. Not much traffic tho.

Italy - drive on right, nice roads, tough in cities, fine on highways.

Is anyone familiar with the route from Ankara to Urgup?

Thanks!

  1. If you don't wanna die, don't drive in Turkey. I am a Turk and I am a nationalist Turk. I would not tell you this, if traffic was not like a war in Turkey :(

  2. Somebody had said driving in Turkey is like driving in France... crazy. Don't know myself, though. Have never driven in France.

I don't know the roads from Ankara to Ürgüp, but I know that there are some people who don't abide by the traffic laws and that you have to be careful.

  3. This comes from a tourist,   that did drive in Ankara, and down to the coast,  and over the mountains,  but i must say that they * stay in your lane*  rule that most places have, do not seem to apply,  I did not see any * traffic police*  the entire time that i was there,   I am not sure that they give out tickets the same way as here in the states,    They also seem to park anywhere they want,  there seems to be no rules about where, and how to park,   so just go with the flow,  be ready for anything,  but they do drive on the right side of the road, there are not big * shoulders*  on the road, many times there is no shoulder,  it just drops right off.   There was not a lot of traffic long distance, ( i guess the price of gas and all )  but in Ankara, it was non stop and very fast, There was suddenly five lanes where there was suppose to be three,   LOL  it did take a lot of getting use to . and a good sense of humour.   so just relax and enjoy it,   good luck

  4. Your route must be:

Ankara-Gölbaşı- Bala- Karakeçili- Köprüköy- Kaman- Kırşehir-Hacıbektaş- Nevşehir-Ürgüp. This route takes 5 hours at normal conditions (90km/h) . This is the fastest way by car. The road among Ankara-Bala is divided, has 4 lanes. After that 2 lanes. So you must be carefull while overtaking cars. (I mean at right side you drive, left side cars drive towards to you) 2 laned roads are generally damaged. Howerer, i think, this road isn't crowded..

The roads are safe but you must know some tel. no.s:

    Police : 155

    Traffic Police: 154

    Emergency: 112

    Gendarme: 156

In Turkey we drive on right. Good trip..

Edit: Ankara is very crowded so do the traffic, especially afterwork. (17.00- 19.00) You don't want to drive at the traffic jam. The other cities are small so you can comfortably drive..

  5. Wouldn't know about that route, but I have noticed that they drive pretty wild in Turkey... LOL :)
