Question:

Driving in a private estate?

Hi,

I have a provisional driving license. My sister has a full driving license. I am wondering if it is ok for me to drive her car, while accompanied by her, without me being insured on her car, so long as it is within' a private business estate and not on a public road?

I would be more interested in people responding to this that are located in the republic of ireland (which is where i am located), but I would be greatful for all comments on this query.

Thank you.

David.

  1. well, i'm from the US so i cant speak exactly of your laws or policies, but over here, the police are usually pretty cool about letting someone learn to drive. even if you didnt have a permit at all and your sister was just teaching you, as long as its an empty lot and no one is walking around in it, the police are generally quite okay with it. like i said though, i cant speak of how police work over in ireland. i would just walkaround outside til i found a policeman and ask him.

  2. if its private land you can drive what you want

  3. It's not ok. If you aren't insured and you have an accident you are in big trouble.  You also need to make sure that you are drivign with someone over the age of 21 who has held a full license for at least 3 years.

  4. No, you would still need to be insured. What happens if another motorist uses the private road and you crash in to him? If you have no insurance, he can't claim off you for the damage. You also need to bear in mind that the businesses on that road all have owners. If you crash in to their property, again, they wont be able to claim.

  5. real good question! I think that you need to either own the land, or have permission off the person who does own the land, otherwise, if there is public access and someone else is driving there and you hit them (god forbid) you could be in some serious poo poo! Similar for if you hit one of the lampposts ont he business park - the owners would be pretty p*ssed off with you if you weren't insured and didn't have their permission!!

    :)

  6. not  on  a  bizz  estate  but  on  a  private  estate  u  wouldnt  need  anything...not  even  a  provisional  or  someone  with  u

  7. You would be surprised at how few private estates are in fact private!

If ordinary drivers can visit the estate it may not be fully private. e.g. visit to deliver post, goods or just drive through.

I suggest you ask in the nearest police station-- they should know the regualations. Check it out first. I would not rely on answers on here for something like this because no one on here has any idea precisely what you are describing as a private business estate.

I live near to a business estate, it is in no way private as cars regularily drive through it.

IF, and its a big IF, this estate you refer to is your own property and is gated to keep cars out, I suspect it has the same status as driving around a private field.

IF its an industrial estate and  other vehicles use it, you cannot drive around uninsured.

  8. Motor vehicle laws do not extend onto private land, at least in the USA it doesn't.

Most common application of this would be for young family or hired labor on farms usually end up having to drive a motor vehicle on the private land.  As soon as the vehicle needs to cross or travel down a public roadway, it is then that you would need to be licensed.

I believe that you could drive as long as the vehicle does not enter a public motorway.

  9. You may be within a private business estate but if you are driving without insurance and crash into someone either killing them or injuring them then you are libel to be sued or made bankrupt.
