  1. the minimum is 18 no matter what.

  2. That's an interesting question, since the opinion on it is controversial. In Germany, U.K./U.S. tourists on stay for less than 90 days, may operate a motor-vehicle, regardless of age, if they hold the appropriate full license of their country.

I called the Dutch police (00 31 34357 8844) and asked that question. They first told me, that the minimum age is 18, but after I told about Germany, they were not sure and could not provide correct information on the spot.

I therefore recommend, if you really plan to visit France, to ask for the information at the French Embassy in London.

  3. No unfortunately it's not.

Whilst you can drive at 17 in the UK it is 18 in France (and many other European countries).  Whilst you are in their countries then you have to follow the local rules (speed limits, right of way, age limit etc) which may all be different from the UK

So, sorry but you'll have to wait a while until you can drive abroad!

EDIT - LaFeeFan.  I passed my driving test at 17 in the UK and checked with the French police, English police, British DVLA and AA...... all stated that the local laws apply and not UK law in France (same as any other law!)
