  1. If you are in Italy less than 12 months, you need only an International Driving Permit (it's just a translation of your licence):

If not, you need to obtain an Italian driving licence.

  2. If you haven't a licence in america, you can't drive in italy.to have the licence in italy you must be 18,then go to a driving school to take lesson, when you have 18 yeas,a month and a day,you can do "the teory" a quiz(if  your birthday is the 1 april, you can do this test the 2 may). Then you can do "the pratical" you drive with an examinator. To take the licence you must do some driving lesson with an istructor.

I don't know if I tell you what do you want..my english is terrible!!
