HI Yahoo answerers!

I'm sorta new to this thing called driving... I got my permit and all, just gotta wait 6 months until I can take the behind the wheel test and lets just say I'm not very good at driving.

I dont' know what to do sometimes, like if I should creep up at intersections, which lights to look at when turning at certain places and the main thing that everyone tells me about is my speed. I go too slow, mostly on turns because of me thinking that the steering wheel does not turn back to it's original position after you turn.

When you make a sharp turn how do you expect me to go fast when the steering wheel is still turned nearly all the way? That is what I don't get and it really effects my driving. So mainly it's the steering wheel problems.

Also, I don't know my streets very well, I never paid attention when my parents were driving me around... is that normal?

Thank you for reading and please don't leave me awful comments saying how I'm not intelligent or something.

AND PLEASE.... tell me what your problems were when you FIRST started driving or even your problems whlie driving as of today!

=D

  1. sounds like you need more practice at empty parking lots... Nothing is wrong with the steering wheel... You just got to find your rthymn and then you will feel more control with the car. Don't worry I had a problem going the speed limit... I kept speeding because I felt pressured by cars behind me lol. I stopped that now.

  2. Hey man, don't worry about it. When I started driving I was the same way. All the old ladies would pass me on the highway and my turns were pretty slow too. I would take forever at intersections to make sure nobody was coming. It just takes practice. After a few months you get used to things and pretty soon everything becomes natural. Just get out and practice as much as you can. And don't worry about being slow. At this point it's better to be slow and safe than rush things and get in a wreck. I can guarantee you'll be going faster soon. Good luck!

  3. All your problems are perfectly normal for someone who "just" got their permit.  It generally takes 3-4 months of practice before you feel proficient at driving.

About turning and steering wheel stuff, there's really no formula.  It just comes with practice.   It's like riding a bike.   You don't need to think, you just need to get a feel for it.  After you make a couple dozen turns, it will start to go smoothly.  Don't worry yet, you're just at the beginning.

  4. !st get the following, A new driver's manual from your state's department of motor vechiles. a Road map of your city and state.

and study them forwards and backwords, have a friend or relitive ask you lots of questions. Next ask to barrow the family car and take it to a vacant parking lot and practice your driving . Too slow is always better then to fast. and yes when you turn the corner the wheel will move the tires in the direction you turn them. Good luck !

  5. to be completely honest you should try and go drive with some one that you arent related to because they can teach you a little better because i know when im driving with my parents they freak out without me doing anything and i cant learn myself

  6. yea 1st off u should get someone else to help other than a parent cuz they trip. but........my main problem was stopping and going, i would press down too hard, also i swerved a lot but now i'm a great driver. u should call a driving school. that way u can get driving hours and also learn road rules as u drive cuz they'll ask questions about the road n stuff

  7. Ok. This problem is normal. You'll get used to the speed thing and stuff as you begin driving more.  Also don't worry about the other drivers getting mad. You pay attention to how your driving and you making yourself a better driver. You also might want to your a alignment on your car. It will make sure your wheels and steering wheel are on the same page. This will make it easier to work on your turning and such.

Here is and story about my first driving experience.

I was driving around town and I was doing great. Then we decided to practice up in the hill where there are no lines on the roads. I had not developed my sence of location on the road. I nearly ran us into the ditch SEVEN times. My mom almost killed me. But I got better. I worked at it alot. Now I know where my car is supposed to be even without lines on the road. Haha.

You'll be a good driver. Just keep working on it. Oh and don't get mad at parents when they critisize your driving. They are only trying to help.

    WORK HARD!

Good luck. Be safe. NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE!
