Let's say the speed limit is 20mph in a school zone, but you know for a fact that school is not in session. Is it required/ the law to slow down to 20mph, or is ok to go a bit faster?

  1. If no school is in session or the lights are not flashing you do not need to drive the posted speed limit……...

  2. You must drive 20 mph in any school zone unless posted otherwise. No acceptions.

Example of extra posting may include but are not limited to : During specific hours or when lights are flashing.

  3. 25 mph in the state of NJ

  4. In AZ, where I live, some school zone signs say "when children are present" others say "between 7:00am-4:00pm" others say "anytime". It depends on what the sign says.

Even if it's a Sunday morning and I see a flashing school zone sign, I slow down. That's a ticket you don't want to get.

  5. 20 mph is what you usually see in city limits and yes you are required to drive the posted limit (during posted school hours) or you are subject to whatever fine your state charges if you are caught. Out in the country (rural areas) school zones can climb up to 35 mph.

If no school is in session you must drive no faster then the posted regular speed limit.

  6. Depends on the stste you are in. In Ca. it is posted 25 when children are present
