My hubby failed his mock test the other day and is gutted, he failed to follow the road signs on some roads and got 3Serious and 7Minors. Anything i can say to cheer him up? Got his test soon also. Anybody else in a similar position? or has been?

  1. That's a good thing. The mock test is to show you your faults so you don't make them on the day. It's far less likely he will do the same again during the test.

  2. With BSM, all our pupils go through a mock test with another instructor.  We do and say the correct wording that an examiner would use.

I am strict when on mock tests.  There was one girl with me who was booked to sit her real test the following week.

Off we went and after a few minutes she settled into it.  As I marked her faults I also took some notes, ( all instructors are good with mental notes) .  On return to the test centre, her instructor joined us.  As I explained a few minor faults to her and a good debrief to both pupil and fellow colleague I had to tell her she failed. Her mouth dropped to the floor and the look she gave me, well what can I say.  As I was about to tell her where she failed, her instructor said that she is a superb driver and surely I was mistaken.... I then butted in and told her that when she left the test centre she had forgetton to put on her seat belt.  She had driven for about 15 miles and 40 minutes without a belt on..... laughed we nearly did.

She passed with 2 minors that following week.

Nerves do play a serious part and all examiners will try and reassure you.  Although we did have 1 examiner at our local TC, Big Roy.  Ex traffic cop and you knew it as well.  Did not speak to instructors unless they chapped his office door and asked to speak.... Not a good day, it was just let's go.

I had Kirsty, a pupil who had sat 2 tests with Roy before I met her and she was ready for her test.  As Roy is the only examiner in the local town we knew it was going to be him.  She went for it and failed..... 2 weeks later she went back.  This time I told her to break the ice with him. I know there was a decent bloke under that examiners badge.  Sure enough he was there that Tuesday, Roy I said, Kirsty thinks your going to fail her this time....he turned and looked at her and said, My dear, I get £10 for every pass........... (he turned to lock his office door, turned and said.... but I get £50 for every fail, lets go...... I could hear them talking away and laughing to the test car.... SHE PASSED.

Nearly all my pupils who sat mocks with other instructors usually failed but passed their real test later on...

Just tell him to cheer his face up and stop moaning... He will be fine...GOOD LUCK

Was it the ice breaker, or did he feel sorry??? We will never know.

  3. I've now got my test in September , it was due for july 23rd. I had a mock test on Friday 13th June , complete nightmare ,I feel that todays learners have much more pressure for them to pass than in days gone by , 3 majors and 7 minors is nothing just tell your husband , to focus postively between now and his test , if push comes to shove and he feels not quite ready then move the test back a month , that way u aren't losing any money.

    good luck

  4. well thats the idea of a mock test.........learn from your mistakes, simple as...good luck though on his test day.

  5. The thing you can say to cheer him up is that his examiner will not be nearly as severe as his instructor. I did a mock test for one of my pupils yesterday and failed her on 3 serious faults about 13 minors. I usually fail or pass people (if i can) on purpose - passing the ones that need a confidence boost, and failing the ones that need a kick up the bum!! If I do fail them I always let them know that there are only a few things they needed to do differently and they would have passed - 3 serious isn't that bad for a mock test - and 7 minors is nothing - tell him, he just has to focus and really pay work on his lessons and he should pass with flying colours :)

Regarding following road signs, I want to find out where uncle fester works as a driving examiner, because at the 4 test centres I use, the examiners ALL state quite clearly at the beginning of the test that if they do not give any directions the pupil should follow the road ahead at all times unles road markings or signs indicate otherwise.

In other words, if the road splits left and straight on, but there is a sign saying "all traffic turn left" then the examiner will not tell you to turn left, the idea being that if you pass your test you should be able to drive anywhere, alone. Now if you can't follow the road signs and turn left without someone telling you then surely you shouldn't be driving??!!

I might start bringing my pupil's to uncle fester's test centre as I'm sure it would increase my first time pass rate no end!!

  6. Mock tests  are often meaningless as most driving instructors are much too hard when it comes to assessment . Also a driving examiner wouldn't ask you to follow road signs, they will give you clear simple directions and won't  leave you in any doubt as to which way they want you to go. (I am a driving examiner  so speak  from experience)
