Question:

Driving my BMW in a winter storm with no snow tires???

I recently purchased a 97 BMW and haven't yet bought snow tires. I'm at work now and a pretty decent winter storm is supposed to be hitting in the next few hours. My commute also involves driving over a large bridge. I'm thinking im just about screwed. Has anyone driven in similar conditions without winterizing a rear-wheel drive car??

  1. When I was younger I couldn't afford snow tires on my cougar. Driving on the highway wasn't too bad. My problem was parking spaces or areas with large hills to drive over.

  2. Youcan drive safely in any conditions as long as you properly adapt to them. And yes, I have driven in a bad freezing rain storm in Michigan in a Cadillac CTS with no winter tires--all went just fine as I said above.

    Take it easy, literally.

    Safe drive!

  3. If your car still has the original equipment size wheels and tires, it is quite probable that it already has all-weather tires that are rated for mud & snow mounted on it.  If the tires have adequate tread depth left on them, they should be good enough for a gentle drive home in winter driving conditions.

Just remember that NO tire is going to give you dry-pavement handling capabilities while you are driving on snow or ice. Slow down and think about what you're doing while driving on potentially slippery surfaces.
