  1. go earlier in the day when there is less traffic.

I also add about 10-15 minutes to my commute by going the longer SAFER way then the short faster way.

Avoid drinking and eating in the car.  Get some nice tunes on or a nice premade cd in the car (don't be changing those channels).

Don't talk on your cell phone or get wireless headset.

  2. Don't be nervous, just be cautious.  Be a defensive driver, in other words; watch out for the other guy.  Try to be attentive to all of your surroundings and not paranoid.  The more you drive, the more comfortable you'll be.  Breathe, relax, and enjoy.

  3. The simple answer to this is drive more often. You will get to be more comfortable with the car, the controls and your reactions will get better.

Start off with the local areas you are familiar with, and then start wandering off to less familiar places, it is important that you don't stick to familiar roads otherwise you might not be confident enough to tackle an important journey when you really need to. All the best, and take your time.

  4. Go somewhere or at a time of day where there will be less traffic e.g. in the countryside if you can or minor roads. You'll have less traffic to think about and more time to think about your next move. The nerves will fade the more you practise I've just started having driving lessons with my dad and I just want to  get in the passenger seat and give up because I was scared I'd start the engine and do something horribly wrong and go hurtling over a cliff or something. I suppose it's like riding a bike - daunting and scary at first but the more you practise the more confident you become. Hope all goes well

    :-)

  5. I don't have much to add, but I just want to thank you for being nervous.  That's strange I know, but it tells me you are taking your new responsibility very seriously.

You need hours with an experienced driver for sure.  I think driver's education starts the moment your parents drive you home from the hospital.

My daughter is 4 years old and I'm already teaching her everytime we go somewhere in the car!

  6. I think that it is good that you are cautious! There are some WACKOS out there! I think that practice makes perfect. I think you might take a friend (or maybe a parent) with you with more experience, and just get out there to make yourself more comfortable. If there is something that you have been having a hard time with...such as...parking. Practice in an empty lot or just park where you feel safer. The main thing is...TAKE YOUR TIME.  If you can travel in non-rush-hour traffic it will benefit you greatly! You have the right to drive and learn at your pace. If it takes you a while to make a turn, don't worry about the people behind you. Make sure you are aware of the laws and you'll be fine. Be confident that you can handle it, because you can!
