  1. Fatigue is a major factor, especially on long trips when drivers don't get enough sleep or stop often enough to rest.

A big cause of people falling asleep at the wheel was (and still is) highway hypnosis. Staring at the road for long periods without moving your eyes can easily lull anyone to sleep.

A few years ago, safety experts had ways to combat it. They suggested NOT keeping your eyes riveted on the road, but to take brief glances around at the surroundings, billboards, scenery, etc.

More suggestions were to sing, chew gum, play the radio, and talk to passengers if possible. And they worked.

However, nowadays those things are all considered to be a distraction. People say never to look away from the road, don't talk, don't play your radio, etc. etc. They want all that banned.

Sorry, but I like the old way better. Drivers stand a much better chance of reaching their destination by staying awake.

  3. the stress and constant attention. you can be tired from sitting on the couch all day also.

  4. Apparently you've never commuted before. Driving requires you to be alert and focused. In addition to sitting in the same position the entire time, this is fatiguing. There are also other factors that can make you tired, such as stress from driving in heavy traffic, driving into bright sunlight, or dangerous weather conditions.

If driving for a long period of time doesn't make you tired, you aren't paying good enough attention to what you are doing. Consequently, you're probably a rolling accident waiting to happen.
