I am currently 15 and will be starting my sophmore year. When I turn 16 how do I recieve my driving permit? Since I turn 16 towards the begining of the school year, can I recieve it then, or do I have to wait longer til I complete my drivers ed class first?

When you get your permit what do you have to do? What are all the restrictions?

  1. You have to pass your written test to get your permit.  In order to get your permit at 16 1/2 (you CAN'T get it at 16), you have to have 6 hrs behind the wheel practice - so you have to either have it through your high school or a private driving school (I used Taggart), otherwise, you have to wait until 17 to get your permit.

The NJ State Motor Vehicle Bureau website can describe the exact restrictions.

When I got my license at 17 there really were no restrictions, just that my license could be suspended with a lot less points than after age 20.

  2. you must complete a driver's ed course, take and pass a written test, and then practice 6 hours of driving with an instructor in order to receive your permit at the end of all of that. depending on where in NJ you live, i'd recommend precision driving school, but i'm not sure that you live in an area they cover.

they will take you to the DMV to do what you need to do in order to be given the permit at the end of your 6 hours and they will present you with it at the end.

once you have the permit, you can only drive between certain hours (i think something like 6 am til midnight or so) WITH a licensed parent in the car - and i don't remember permit restriction rules but i think there may be a rule about not more than one non-immediate family passenger in the vehicle?

once you get your restricted license at 17 (you must take a road test of course), your rules change to not having to have a parent in the car, but again, not more than one non family member, and you can only drive between like 6 am and midnight.
