At the rate that teenagers are currently having car accidents do you think they will increase the age that you have to be to drive and if so what age will it be?

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 15- to 20-year olds.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 3,490 drivers in this age group died in motor vehicle crashes in 2006 and an additional 272,000 were injured.

Drivers age 15- to 20-years old accounted for 12.9 percent of all the drivers involved in fatal crashes and 16 percent of all the drivers involved in police-reported crashes.

Twenty-five percent of teen drivers killed were intoxicated. In 2002 (latest data available) the estimated economic cost of police-reported crashes involving drivers between the ages of 15 and 20 was $40.8 billion, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov ).

Among licensed drivers, young people between the ages of 15 and 20 have the highest rate of fatal crashes relative to other age groups, including the elderly. In fact, the risk of being involved in a fatal crash for teens is three times greater than for drivers age 65 to 69.

Immaturity and lack of driving experience are the two main factors leading to the high crash rate among teens.

as a 16 year old I truly hope they raise it. Kids these days are so stupid and are retarded drivers. All my friends tell me storys of stupid c**p theyve done and accidents and its just sad. And if you ask 90% of kids these days they will say there great drivers. A girl i talked to got her licence today and thinks shes a great driver.....she can only drive an automatic. HAHAHAHAH.

Driving is a HUGE responsabilty you are in charge of your life and every other persons on the road.

Driving age should be 21 drinking 18 and smoking should be illegal. just my 2 cents

Massachusetts made the requirements tougher and the laws stricter. It seems to have had a positive effect. But really nothing will take the place of responsible parenting.

edit: Is it increasing because the population is? Or are teens engaging in riskier behavior?  It seems to me that teens are more reckless nowadays. I see enough of it. They don't seem to care, which is maybe normal for their age.

18. I do think 16 is too young.

I think teens should get their learners permit at 15 and a resticted license at 161/2 which should restict them to day time driving only. At age 17 the teen should get full driving priveleges only if they have maintained a good driver record.

I do believe that teenagers are driving worse now then they were years ago. I think a lot of it has to do with the parents. They are not spending enough time with their kids. They let get them their license before they are ready and then they turn them loose. My next door neighbor is 16 and she has her license. She pretty much comes and go as she pleases. Her parents stay gone half of the time so they don't even know what she is doing or where she is. She flys up and down our street all the time like a manaic. Its only a matter of time before she has an accident and her parents seem to be completely clueless of how she drives or they don't care. My parents made me wait until I was almost 17 before I got my license and if I drove down our street like she does I would of been in some serious trouble.

There are two other teenage drivers that live in my neighborhood and they are the complete opposite. Their parents seem to keep better tabs on them and anytime I have seen them out driving they were driving safely. I think it would be a good idea to make the teen hold on to their learners permit longer so maybe they will have more driving experience before they get their license.
