Hi,

In a test exam there is a question like this:

"Always leave extra space in front of you when:"

a) in bad weather

b) someone is following you closely

c) you are following a motorcycle

d) all of the above

I chose A. but it was D, why?

How come putting more distance between me and the vehicle in front of me is good if someone is too close to me from the behind?

  1. You have to leave space in front of your car at all times because if someone hits you from behind you have enough room to swerve or apply the brakes with enough space from hitting the car in front of you.

  2. someone behide can hid u an u will be pushed foward so there is space so u dont hit purson infrount of u it is now 3 car legths distange away from other cars

and u can messere how many car lengths u r folling by coulting 1 thousand 2 thousand 3 thousand when the car ahead of u passes like a sign an at 3 thousand u shound just pass that point.

  3. Let's say the car in front of you has to stop suddenly. If you are following at a standard distance and break appropiately you should not hit the car in front. However, if you have someone behind you following too close and the same thing occurs the car behind you will hit you and most likely push you to hit the car in front. The extra room you have between you and the car in front might prevent the car behind you from causing a multicar accident.

Also if someone is too close behind you and you don't speed up odds are they will pass you.

  4. A - in bad weather, it takes longer to stop

B - if someone is following you closely, and hits you, you could be knocked into the vehicle in front of you

C - motorcycles can ofter stop faster than cars, if you are too close you could hit one.

D - now you see why it is all of the above.

  5. Because when they slam into your car's rear end you don't want to take out the car in front of you as you get propelled forward.

Also, be sure to give motorcycles plenty of room.  They could hit a rock or a patch of slippery road and go down. You don't want to run over the riders.
