Question:

Driving question?

I was at an intersection today and experienced this.

I was sitting at the light waiting to make a right turn. The light was red so I was waiting for the traffic to clear.

As soon as the light turned green though, I went to make my turn.

When I did, all the cars on the other side of the intersection that were turning left started to go and I had to wait, even though my light was green.

Who has the right of way?

I thought it was me, but I don't know if I was wrong or if I just didnt jump out fast enough. (I live in Florida if that helps)

  1. You had the right of way.  It would be just like if you had been going straight - the have to yield to you.  Darn Floridians!

  2. I am presuming that you mean that they were cars turning left after the light went yellow to red correct?  If so, right-of-way or not, you should have waited and let them go.  Lots of people (especially in Florida) run red lights so it makes that left turn very difficult here and many get edged out into the middle of the intersection and have to go on the red sometimes.  It is always best to proceed on the side of caution and let them go before you go.

  3. If you had to wait, then they had the right of way. If you would have gone, then you'd have the right of way.

If you have the right of way, and don't 'use' it, and someone else 'takes' it, then they have the right of way, and you have to wait.

  4. It sounds like they had the arrow so they had the right of way so you needed to yield............remember that green does not always mean go....
