Hi,

In a test exam there is a question like this:

"If your car begins to skid, you should:"

a) take your foot off the accelerator and turn in the opposite direction of the skid

b) take your foot off the accelerator and turn in the direction of the skid

c) brake immediately and turn in the direction of the skid

d) brake immediately and turn in the opposite direction of the skid

I chose A. but it was B, why?

I thought steering to the opposite direction would compensate or the skid.

  1. you always turn into a skid.

  2. Depends if it's front or rear wheel drive

  3. Its sort of like drifting. If you steer oposite the skid you will spin out and completely loose control. If you steer with the skid you can regain control of your car. As long as you dont over steer...then you just spin the other direction.

  4. I got this. I was a valet for 12 years and dealt with cars in the rain alot. You want to stop breaking to stop the skid, when you turn into the skid your tires will align and you can steer out of the skid. If you continue to skid you have no traction and will not go into the direction required.

  5. A would make your car spin around in a circle.

B would give your car a chance to "catch" then steer out of the skid.

If you ever watch drifters (racing), that is exactly what they do.  Look at the front wheel of these drivers.

    Good Luck...

  6. Because with A you then oversteer the other way and lose control. If you steer the way it's skidding you maintain the natural flow, stop sooner and keep control.
