Question:

Driving test - Use of mirrors(UK BASED)?

Hi, hopefully someone will be able to help me out with this lil one.

I am on the run up to my driving test for the 1st time.<gulp>

When reversing into a bay, my instructor has told me to lower my mirrors so i can clearly see the bay lines in them before i start the maneouver, this i have done since day 1 and have no problems in reverse parking.I then alter them back to normal and drive on

Now, my work colleague is also approaching her test date with another instructor and they say that any alteration of the mirrors after they have originally been adjusted at the start of the lesson could lead to a fail, or at least one mark against your overall test.

Please can anyone, preferable a driving instructor comment on this, I would be very grateful

Thanking you in advance

Andy

  1. I wouldn't adjust your mirrors to aid reversing as this indicates to your examiner that you're relying on them, which when reversing is a fault. You will be marked down if you complete the manoeuvre staring at the mirror. There is a very strong chance you'll forget to re-adjust them as well.

I always had blind-spot mirrors attached to my school car which give a wide angle view, a quick glance at them gave the pupil their position in relation to the line/kerb.

OllyJM, A good idea in principal, but they won't tell you. Thats considered as instruction. They will reply " Do what you think is right"

  2. Consider asking your examiner on the day. If it's still like it was when I took my motorbike test, you'll have thirty seconds or so of talking to the examiner before you actually start your test, and they can't fail you for asking a hypothetical question.

  3. well if u adjust your mirrors then u hav to put them back again and u might not put it back in the right position and risk not being able to see the objects u want to see in your mirrors

if your colleague is having hers first ask her if she was marked down or found it harder without adjusting the mirrors

then you'll know what to do

  4. From my understanding you should adjust your mirrors once before the test and leave them alone..reason is you will remove your hands from the wheel and this will fail you....

  5. I would NOT adjust the mirrors.you should be well aware of your distances by this stage anyways.size up the parking spot as you're pulling up, you should be going slow enough to have a good look before preparing to reverse ,this will make it easier to pick your point of when to turn the wheel.

    good luck and safe driving

P.S.i'll just sit in the middle of the road while you get yourself ready with your mirrors o.k take your time ive apparently got plenty(THAT WAS A JOKE)GOOD LUCK!
