ok guys, help me on this. I have a international driving license and I have been driving here in UK for a few months. since my international license is going to expire in a couple of months and my country doesn't have an exchage treaty with the UK, i have to get a new UK driving license.

as a first step, i have got the provisional license and i intend to take the theory test and the driving test in the next couple of weeks. my question is.. while going for the diving test, is it necessary for me to take car with L plates? secondly i have a current insurance on my international license. do i have to get insurance for provisional license?

thanks in advance for your reponses :)

  1. Very good question, I don't know the answer. The first thing that springs to mind is that your International license is valid, so no L plates required. Similar with insurance.

While DVLA & the Test centre should know, I would ask the AA or the RAC, I would think you will get an answer quicker.

  2. if u are driving in ur own car or friends (not the instructors car) then u will need L plates and insurance, if u are using the instructors car then u just pay for the time u use it.

  3. Are you sure you need to take the test? I would phone the DVLA in Swansea and double check.

    Telephone: 0870 240 0009

  4. to be safe you should get in touch with driving test centre for clarification on the L plate question .

Again regarding the insurance question you should get in touch with your insurer, as various companies have different rules and regulations

  5. firstly the second you applied for the uk provisional licence, you full international licence was superceeded by the provisinal, regardless if you otherone hasnt run out yet...your currant insurance will cover your and the car u take your test in must have l plates on....hope this cleared it up a bit..

  6. Yes you can take your test in a car without fitting L plates.  Make sure you have a stick on extra mirror for the examiner to use during the test (this is a health and safety issue so  the the examiner can check behind without having to turn his head.)  Insurance,  Providing you are fully insured to drive you car on the international driving licence then you are ok for the test.
