  1. best way to drive through Mexico is as fast as possible...but then again I never cared much for it and had bad experiences witht he locals.

  2. My advice is to go along the Pan American Hwy from Honduras, through Guatemala, until you get to San Cristobal de la Casas in Chiapas, Mexico.  From there I would head north to Villahermosa, and then continue on along the eastern coast of Mexico up into Texas.  This will avoid having to go through Mexico City (someplace it is just better not to drive) and also cut out a  lot of mountain driving.  You'll still get mountains as you drive through Chiapas, but not nearly as much as if you were going through the center of Mexico.

I'm not sure where you can stay with the dogs.  Smaller towns may actually be more accommodating to that, but I've never traveled with dogs.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Go to xelapages.com, go to their general discussion board and look for Sept 22, 2007: Driving from Xela to Texas.  There you will find a very detailed description of a drive from Xela, Guatemala to Texas and back.  It includes hotel names and prices.  Once you are in US, it will be very easy.

    Hope it helps!

  4. what ever you do, do NOT drive thru or neer mexico city.

  5. You can use the website below to map out the trip.  I am presuming you know about poor road conditions, not driving at nite.  You will Need a Guia Roji, the Mexican road atlas avail at book stores and Oxxo convenience stores.

Use the small, local Mexican hotels or motels, not big American chain hotels.  The dogs will need a very recent vet check and vaccinations to take them into Mexico, then  the U.S.
