I do a courier route every Saturday, and rainy season has just hit with a florish. The last 2 Saturdays I've encountered heavy rains and this last Saturday I started getting really concerned about some of the flooded out streets. I try to avoid them when I can, but what information should I know incase I underestimate the "puddles" on the road. I want to make sure I protect my car as best I can in these situations.

  1. do what your already doing. if a stream overflows the road don't assume the road is still  under the water as it may have also been washed out. what ever you deliver is not worth your life or the life of people trying to save you.

  2. Drive slowly. Leave your lights on so the driver behind you can see your car.

  3. I am a truck driver and my advise to you is, if you cant see the street don't drive threw it. If the water is high and has a flow to it, it can and will Carry you with it.

  4. The most important thing to know is the height of the exhaust pipe from the ground . If you drive through standing water that's higher than that pipe, you most likely will kill the engine and it will not re-start until the water is drained . If you are not sure, don't . Check the sides of he road . If the curbs are not visible, look for another route . Watch oncoming traffic . If they are kicking up heavy water sprays, be wary . Keep an eye on your brakes . When they get wet, they will not operate properly . Step on the brake pedal lightly until you feel the vehicle start to slow . This tells you that the brakes are dry enough to do the job.

    All the best.

  5. You never assume a puddle in the road...........

    1. Reduce your speed.

    2. Lights always on.

    3. Wipers always on.

  6. Besides putting a snorkel on your car I'm not sure there is anything you can do.  You're doing the best thing anyone can do - avoiding them to start with.
