Driving too far on the right side??

I'm trying to learn how to drive and my i'm told that my biggest issue is that on roads with out lane markers, i tend to position myself too far on the right, I've almost hit numerous parked cars. Is this a common problem or am i retarded?? Are you actually supposed to be as far the left as possible without hitting oncoming traffic, or should you slightly tend to the right?

  1. drive as far to the right as possible, but give yourself at least a foot, if not two between you and the parked cars.  sometimes this can be tricky if cars are parked on both sides of the road, and there is oncoming traffic.  If it looks like you can't fit, slow down and wait for the other car to come through then you go through.

  2. It's a simple beginner's problem, and you're supposed to drive in the CENTER of the lane; not to the right, or to the left, but in the middle. The best way to accomplish this is to adjust your side-view mirrors where you can glance at them every few seconds, and see the lines, and see how far your tires are away from those lines.

  3. When you are driving, you should be looking well ahead up your intended path of travel.........so, don't look at the parked cars, but do look up the middle of your lane or over the car ahead of you travelling in the same direction.

Your hands follow your eyes. That's how your brain works.

Glance in your right side mirror for a second from time to time also, to let you see how far away you are.

With practice this will become an automatic response.

Remember, always LOOK where you want to steer and where you want to go. It works on corners too.

  4. Drive while looking 20 seconds down the road, it always works.
