Should we drive there or fly and hire a car etc? Not into clubbing more nature and history things.

  1. I stay in Glasgow and I am as far north as I wish to go, but if that's what you like there is lots to see, but as you have been told some places in Inverness can be few and far between and most of the hotels etc are booked well in advance, Aberdeen has a nice City for shopping but if its nature and green fields the east coast of Inverness is probably the best petrol at the moment in Glasgow is 117p per litre.

  2. There's not really that much to see in the far north.  There's Dunrobin Castle, Culzean Castle, in fact, castles are the only thing to see, unless you like to do a bit of hill walking, in which case the highlands are the place to be.  I go up there walking every year (from Glasgow).  There are barely any eating places north of Inverness.  Most places are self catering, and shops are few and far between.

If you're coming up from any further south than about Sheffield or Nottingham, you'd be better to fly to Glasgow International and hire a car, cos the price of petrol is horrendous, and it gets worse the further north you go.  It's generally 20p per litre dearer after you go by Inverness, which, incidentally, is the cheapest place to buy petrol / diesel.

  3. where are you now?  if you're in the southern half of England I'd definitely say fly up and hire a car, save yourself a lot of time and aggro ... I love Durness, beautiful place, and do the trip over to Cape Wrath ... last time I was up we drove up to John o'Groats from Inverness (where we were staying) and took the foot ferry over to the Shetlands ... lovely trip ... if I went again though I would take the coach up from Inverness because I'd have more time that way to enjoy the scenery on the way .. it's a lovely drive but the road winds round and round the coast and when you're racing against time not to be late for the ferry you don't enjoy it
