  1. Cell phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year, according to the journal's publisher, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

Drivers talking on cell phones were 18 percent slower to react to brake lights, the new study found. In a minor bright note, they also kept a 12 percent greater following distance. But they also took 17 percent longer to regain the speed they lost when they braked.

The latest study used high-tech simulators. It included people aged 18 to 25 and another group aged 65 to 74. Elderly drivers were slower to react when talking on the phone, too.

The simulations uncovered a twofold increase in the number of rear-end collisions by drivers using cell phones.

  2. Here are some sites about statistics and research about driving while talking on a cell phone:

  3. I'm not sure if you can get the exact numbers on that, but it sure would be in the 30% range! No one seems to believe its a problem yet. I have a cell phone that has an ear piece to it for hands free talking and it seems to me that the newer multi-tasking phone lost that option. If police did pull over more often for that reason and ticket the driver with a stiff fine, that might be a stat you can get good numbers on! I'm in a city that says it against the law to use a cell phone while driving , but its hard to enforce it when the police are on them and driving as well. Chicago's finest!!!! They have cameras on high traffic intersection for red light runners so they should tag a few more bucks on if your on a cell phone at the same time.

  4. You shoudnt drive while using a cell phone because you are preoccupied. You are so busy talking on the phone you are busy. You should always try to do either talking on the phone or drive. You might be talking to someone and someone might be crossing the street. You wouldn't be able to see them. Even if you used a bluetooth device you would still be preoccupied. No talking on a cellphone while driving. Besides, excess cellphone use gives out radiation causing brain damage. People should limit and moderate the time they spend chatting on their cellphones. Good luck on your speech!
