Question:

Driving without insurance in the UK, with an Irish license - what will happen?

I drove my car without realising it was out of insurance. I had been covered by my Irish insurance but this ran out. I have recently moved to London (in the last 4 months) and have been only using public transport, so like a fool i never thought of the insurance. The first time i drive, I was stopped by the police and they have said that as I have an Irish license they cannot just fine and give me points - it must go to court! I got insurance cover the very next day and am not trying to avoid punishment for what i have done - just wondering what is likely to happen to me in court?

  1. Hello

you can drive on the foreign licence for up to a Year (12 Month period) After this, you will have to will have to apply for a UK Provissional licence, and then take the two parts test.

    - Multiple choice and hazard perception theory

    - Practical Driving assesment (Class 'B' Car)

Before taking these, it is reccomended that you take tuition with a UK approved driving instructor, these are identified by green photographic badges displayed on the windscreen.

You have NO Insurance cover on this vehicle, when the Police happen to stop you, Your car will instantly be taken, stored, and you will have 7 days in which to insure, claim and pay the storage fees. Failure to do so, with result in the vehicle to be crushed and disposed of.

    You should purchase insurance immidiately.

  2. i think the license is ok for a year aslong as you have a british provisional. the car has to be insured though

  3. No insurance Mmm that would mean for sure your car

would be impounded and to get it released would be big  money plus you would have to get it insured before

getting it back. That's for starters,6 points on your licence

and a big fine then after, being on the cop register a beady eye will be on you for ever and a day.
