Drogba terms Tottenham as title challengers as Chelsea pursue a fighting course
Chelsea’s two most important players, Didier Drogba and John Terry have come out before their matchup against Tottenham and asked their team mates to step up their performances if they are to reach the heights that they touched
in the 2009-2010 Premier League season. The defending champions have been in a torrid run of form recently, as they lost to Sunderland by three goals at home and then drew away games at Birmingham City and Newcastle United. Not only that, they also drew their
latest league game against Everton at the Stamford Bridge.
In mid-week Chelsea lost to Marseille in their last group stage match in the UEFA Champions League. Such a dip in form has obviously hurt the Blues' chances of retaining their league title but Drogba and Terry are adamant that
Chelsea will fight till the last point to keep hold of their English league crown.
Drogba spoke in his latest interview to the media and said, "It's not getting any easier because we have Tottenham next. Maybe everyone will expect us to lose on Sunday, but it could be different. I see Tottenham as genuine title
rivals now. They are having a good season and there is no reason why they can't challenge. Chelsea used to beat them regularly but things change, that's life, but it is up to us to make it happen again.”
The Ivory Coast national added, "Obviously these three games are not coming at the right time for us, but maybe these matches will change the situation we're in now if we win them. It's not finished yet. It's a difficult moment
for us, but this is the kind of thing that can happen to many teams and it's rare for Chelsea to have a period like this and I hope it's going to get better."
On the other hand, Drogba’s team mate and Chelsea’s captain, John Terry has also come out and given his opinion on the recent suggestions that Chelsea have already given up the race to keep a hold of their English league title.
John was dismissive of these suggestions as he stated, "We won't fold. No chance. I certainly won't, the manager won't and we have big characters like Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda, who have been at the very top for the right reasons. They are world-class
players and big characters. It is time for us all to stand up.”
Terry concluded by remarking, "These are tough games coming up but we have big players here. Hopefully they are prepared to rise to the challenge and put their necks on the line. The players realize that if we don't start winning
again soon then we are going to be giving the title away to our rivals. I am certainly not letting my head go down. I will get everyone going and I will keep doing that right to the end.”
Chelsea face Tottenham on the weekend in their next league encounter and following that match, they face Arsenal followed up by a crucial tie against Manchester United. These three ties can possibly shape the future of Chelsea’s
season as there are already reports that Carlo Ancelloti is just another bad result away from departure from the English champions.
