Question:

Drooling Cat Question?

I have a cat, he's about 7 years old, and he drools a lot now. He's almost always had extremely bad breath, and about a month ago he started drooling. Then it stopped and he seemed fine, but for two days now he's been drooling again and it seems like his mouth is in pain. In case it's too painful for him to eat hard food we feed him "wet" food (there are 3 other cats in the house; he has to eat seperately). Could this be a sign of some illness, and if it is is there any way to help him, preferably without going to the vet?

  1. Sounds like he could have a tooth abscess and/or bad dental disease.  I would recommend taking him in to your vet for an exam.  He may need a tooth or two pulled.  Dental disease can impact major organs in the body including the heart and kidneys because of the amount of bacteria that has direct access to the blood stream  so it is better to get it taken care of sooner rather than later!

  2. Well I work at a vet and it seems to me your cat needs a dental really bad. Drooling, not being able to eat, and bad breath, are signs of a dental disease. She could of gingivitis or periodontal disease. Some diseases of the mouth can lead to even bigger ones such as oral cancer shortening the life of your pet. Dentals are on the expensive side. If the case is severe you could be looking at $200 or more. Think of it this way. your cat could live awhile longer with in terrible pain or you can pay to help him. Atleast go to the vet and see what they have to say. They could give some antibiotics or pain medicine to at least reduce pain.

  3. sounds like he has a bad tooth take him to a vet and have a dental exam done

  4. You're probably going to have to take him to the vet. Do you brush his teeth regularly? Plaque buildup will rot teeth, give someone horrible breath, and in extreme cases, drooling when in a lot of pain. If he's very ouchy, take him to the vet. A rotting tooth can lead to a serious bone infection.

  5. There isn't another way i'm afraid, but you NEED to take him to the vet. It could be a serious gum disease or tooth infection.

  6. rabies

  7. Sounds like an abscessed tooth.

Unfortunately this is something you need to see the vet about. Abscessed teeth can become badly infected, and it may be already given he seems to be in pain. The tooth may need to be pulled, and even if not he may need antibiotics. Only the vet can say for sure.

  8. Drooling can occur for a number of reasons in cats. Probably the most commonly identified reasons are gum or teeth disorders. Oral ulcers can sometimes cause excessive salivation. Problems that lead to nausea, such as renal failure or gastrointestinal disease also cause excessive salivation. Some cats salivate excessively when they are nervous or stressed. This is a common reaction to oral medications and application of flea control products, too. Your vet can help sort through these possibilities and hopefully find a treatable cause.
