Droopys Oscar proves he’s the real deal at Nottingham
Droopys Oscar’s stock continued to rise last night as the speedy pup took the Caffreys Puppy Classic at Nottingham.
Seamus Cahill’s hound had burst onto the scene on Derby final night in May, breaking the Wimbledon track record on debut and being installed as the favourite for next year’s Derby. However, he subsequently went on to disappoint in the Wimbledon Puppy Derby in July, exiting the competition at the semi-final stage.
But connections would have been delighted with his Nottingham campaign which has seen him remain unbeaten throughout the competition, winning by an accumulated margin of 13 lengths.
The final itself was far more predictable than many people had predicted which was good news for the followers of Droopys Oscar, who after flying out from trap six never saw another rival as he went onto score by four lengths ahead of market rival Tudor Prince.
There had been reservations about Oscar’s draw as he had two seeded wide runners on his outside, but his sectional of 5.10 seconds dampened those fears as he made it to the first bend with a two-length lead. Harry Williams’ Tudor Prince kept up the chase of the promising pup but failed to land a clinical blow as in the end Oscar won going away.
Unfortunately for greyhound enthusiasts the timing of the race (21.41) meant that it was unavailable for viewing on the SIS coverage which left plenty of punters robbed of a top-class race.
Whoever made that decision probably needs a lesson in customer service.
Greyhound fans were able to witness the two heats for the sprint competition as the two hot-pot favourites obliged in both of the races. Sprint sensation Rotar Wing (1-4) kept up his incredible form this season by winning the first, and Irish newcomer Slick Citi justified his 4-11 favourite tag by making all in the second. It sets up a mouth-watering clash between the two next Monday, which will hopefully, stupidity permitting, be shown live on the Bags service.
