Droopys Ranger (7-1) produced a dazzling display of sheer effort, as he bagged a victory in Tuesday night’s final of the Owlerton Bookmakers Dual Distance Cup 500m at Sheffield.

The Christine Parker-trained dog landed the £1,000 prize with quite some distance to spare, clocking an impressive 29.32secs. The victory also marked his second successive competition of the year.

It wasn’t to be a night for the punters, as market favourites Moveit Jamie (5-4 favourite), Farloe Titan (9-4) and Magna Flintoff (7-2) failed to pay dividends. Each trapped considerably well, however they created problems for one another as they got caught up in the first bend.

This gave Ranger the opportunity he needed to trap well into the clear, however Honchos Hawk didn’t exactly make things easy for Ranger as he trailed with pace behind. Ranger eventually made good use of all his reserves to finish with a comfortable lead and win the race by more than three lengths from outsider Hawk, who clocked 29.58secs.

Barrie Draper made all the headlines in the build-up to the event as he was represented by half the field. He was unfortunate not to walk away with a winner, and produced a 4, 5, 6 finish. Titan took third in 29.60secs.

On the upside, Draper did produce a victory in the open card, with Glenroe Ginger in a high class 280m sprint.
