how long do you think it will take me to drop my mile time from 6:30 to 5:45. my best time is 5:55 but that was a while ago. im just starting running again and my plan is to run 4-6 miles a day doing a walk/jog until i can jog 6 miles without having to walk or stop at all. After i can do that im going to do speed workouts such as 200 X 12, ladders, etc etc. i did track for 3 years in sprinting so i have a good idea about what to do, i was just wondering, how long do you think it will take? its around 6:30 now and id like it to be at 5:45. thanks for your help guys.

  1. Thats a hard one.  If you have just started back running start out slow and work your way up.  Breaking 6 minutes is hard to do, but i think you can do it.  Just try to build up.  I think you have a good idea of what to do.  Try doing that distance run and then after you have mastered the six miles try to pick up the speed for one or two miles.  You sound like a very good runner who knows what you are doing!

I think it might take you a little practice to get your time down below six.  Just keep with it!  Don't give up!

    Good luck!

  2. It is hard to say how long it will take you to get into track shape. You know what to do, so you will have to wait and see how your body responds to the training.

Normally you would think that it takes 6 weeks to convert from running shape into track shape.

When you run your first race you will know where you stand and can adjust from there.

If your best time was 5:55 and you can run than now after you get into shape dropping down to 5:45 is not a very long trip.

  3. In an October race I ran a 6:33 mile, which then was a killer race for me. But this past Saturday I ran 5:51, so it has been around 7 months. And I run about 24-27 miles a week. So I am guessing that is how long it will take you.

  4. It should take no more than a month or two. Just start running minutes.

    Week 1) 20 minutes hard

Week 2) 30 minutes same pace

Week 3) 35 minutes same pace

Week 4) 40 minutes same pace

Week 5) 45 minutes same pace

once you get to 45 you want to work on running longer in 45 minutes. You should run every day and maybe have one easy day a week and one speed day. Guaranteed if you do this you will break 5:30

  5. I'm gonna have to agree with Lyndi on this one, right now you just need to worry about getting back in shape and running distance, no speed. About two weeks into your training you need to start incorporating those speed workouts back in there so you do not hurt yourself trying to do to much of anything. Just remember the mile is a distance event so you have to get the stamina i know i run it. -Mark Dotson, high school track star.
