So I dropped my kodak camera twice, both times was not a hard fall at all and the camera just shut off and the zoom is broken. I pulled out the zoom lens on my own and this made it turn on again but it will not zoom anymore nor go completely falt into the camera, the first time I dropped it I used the warranty got a new one, then it happened again! Is this mainly a fault of this particular brand? Or have other digital cameras done the same thing?

  1. Kodak's just suck in general, mine is c**p.

    It won't function correctly, either.

  2. All cameras (regardless of type or brand) can (and usually) break when dropped. This is usually due to the lens mechanism. It's made up of multiple motors, gears, slides, levers and cogs. Some of these parts are smaller than the tip of a pen. Henceforth they break easily. Very easily.

Mind you, Kodak is particularly bad for it (and most things too). They're cameras are all cheap plastic. Not even good plastic, bad plastic. I would not recommend buying another Kodak since about 40-60% of the Kodak's that people buy from me will break.

for ultimate durability go for an Olympus 850 or Olympus 1030SW. They're both guaranteed shock proof to 5 feet. If you don't like those models (albeit they're not the best) look for a camera that's heavy and made of metal. These will usually have metal lens machinery, making them more durable. You can find this in some Panasonic, Nikon, and canon models. You can also look for a camera with a lens that doesn't stick out, but image quality will take a small hit (but likely still better than that Kodak you had).

Good luck with the camera. Happy shooting (photos, not  people =D)

  3. Digital cameras are fragile things. Dropping them will most likely break them. This isn't a particular problem, but universal with most cameras.

If you are in the market for a new camera, take a look at the new Olympus 850 SW. It is shock proof, and is stated to withstand a 5 foot drop onto cement. Also, it is waterproof, so you could go swimming with it in the pool.
