Question:

Dropping a course... lose health insurance?

I'm currently taking 12 credit hours at a CC. I was taking 15, but due to being very sick this semester, I had to drop a course I was failing. However, I have been unable to catch up in another course. Being a "full-time student" means having 12 or more credit hours. If I drop this other course and go to 9 credits, will I lose my health insurance instantly? I mean, next semester I plan on taking 12-15 credits--I'm not quitting school. I'm just worried about losing my health insurance in the meantime.

  1. Assuming you're on your parents' policy -  It's not instant, but if/when they find you're not full time, it's retroactive, and they will bill the subscriber for any claims they paid out on your behalf.

  2. Call your insurance company (the number for customer service is on the back of the card) and ask them. Sometimes they give a grace period before they stop. It just depends on the insurance.

  3. if you are on your parents plan there is no way for the insurance company to know if you have already submitted verification for being full time.

i've had to drop to part time but because i already told them i was full time they were never aware.

as long as you are full time next semester and can prove it you will be ok.

  4. Are you on your parents plan or a plan from the school? I would call the number on the back of your insurance card for a definitive answer. In any even you can purchase a temporary insurance plan to cover you. Try Assurant Health they cover most states and you can apply on-line.

  5. Do not take it for granted, use your own head to make the judgement. Here is a good resource I have tried.
