Question:

Dropping classes in college?

I am thinking about dropping my Public Speaking course, as I don't feel I am ready for it. I'd much rather take it next semester or even next year as I just got here. (Freshman) I know you guys are probably going to say something like "no one is ever ready for public speaking" so I'll prepare myself for those answers haha. Does dropping a class automatically mean failing it? Or is that only after the final date of being able to drop classes. Also, how many people drop classes in college?

Thanks.

  1. Not if you drop the course before school starts, it's not even on your record About 70% of college students have dropped at least one class. As long as you do it before the semester starts, you can do it as much as you want but after class has started, it is considered a W and you don't want too many of those on your record.

  2. All schools have what is called a "free to drop without grade penalty" period.  This means you may drop courses without needing permission, and without having any trace of having taken the class at all.  Usually this is a limited time frame, such as the first week and a half, although it's usually longer at community colleges.

Beyond that, you have another drop window but it's called the "drop with grade penalty".  This means you may drop, obtaining permission first, but will receive a W for your grade (no grade points but remains on permanent record).   Window of opportunity varies with different schools and even colleges within the institution.

After that, there is no possibility of withdrawing unless you have serious documented proof of illness or similar, which will require a formal meeting with the Dean.

In any event, you MUST formally withdraw if that is your intent.  If you simply stop attending the class you will definitely earn an F.  This is very important.

  3. There is nothing wrong with dropping classes as long as you do it in time. Once you start your semester, you sometimes realize that certain classes are going to need more time than you thought, so it might be your only option. As long as you drop it before the deadline (usually a couple of weeks into the semester) the professors usually give a wp which is a withdrawal pass, and also refund your money for that class (depending on school). Just make the decision quick before it is too late =)

    good luck!

  4. As long as you withdraw by the date listed, there is no penalty.  If you are getting financial aid, you need to have at least 12 credits to be a full-time student.  Otherwise, just drop it.  Join a club and get some practice speaking--you just really have to do it to get over the fear.
