Drosselmeyer has a window to run in 2012, WinStar to decide on the Classic winners’ future
The 4-year-old Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup winner, Drosselmeyer, has found a way to be on the track next year by winning the $5million race at Churchill Downs on 5 November.
Drosselmeyer was to be retired and stand in New York in 2012, but his contract called for flexibility that if the son of Distorted Humor wins the Breeders’ Cup Classic, then he can run for the year 2012.
The news was disclosed to the public on 9 November by WinStar Farm. Initially WinStar Farm called in October that Drosselmeyer would retire after the Classic, but winning t changed it all.
The longshot exploited a clause in his contract that clear said that if the runners wins the Classic he would be give another year of racing.
“All options are open for Drosselmeyer,” WinStar president Elliott Walden in the release. “We’re weighing all of our options.”
Out of Golden Ballet by Moscow Ballet, Drosselmeyer won the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes back in 2010, and since then hasn’t won anything of much significance which would rate the 4-year-old out there with is Classic rivals Havre de Grace and Uncle Mo.
Drosselmeyer caused the heart break in the Classic, keeping it low key under jockey Mike Smith but when the really asked questions of him, he came out good and benefitted from that honest pace maintained throughout the race in the Classic.
Drosselmeyer he proved that he is the big time runner, when the money was down he came out good and if anything deserves a whole year of run in the races, it is this horse Drosselmeyer.
Nobody has even seen Drosselmeyer finish like this and Mike Smith back with the vengeance after losing the Breeders’ Cup Classic with Zenyatta. The jockey broke down into tears after that but what a race from Mike Smith.
Mike Smith rode Drosselmeyer for the second time in Drosselmeyer’s 3-year-old racing career, and the last time he rode the colt the pair won the Belmont Stakes and now the Classic, maybe trainer Bill Mott should have given Mike Smith more time on Drosselmeyer
but it was about redemption for Mike Smith and he came back roaring, undistracted with all the big favourites around him.
