Drosselmeyer wins One Count Stakes
One Count Stakes was won by Drosselmeyer on May 15, 2011, with a purse of $60,000. This was the colt’s fourth win in twelve starts. He had the services of Jose Lezcano as his jockey, who rode the colt to victory. He covered the 1 ¼ mile in 2:06.07.
The Bill Mott trained, Drosselmeyer paid $6.90, $3.90 and $2.40. He entered the field as being the 2-1 second choice. He beat Birdrun by a neck. The pacesetter, Birdrun returned $ 4.90 and $ 2.70.
Birdrun is also trained by Bill Mott. Inherit the Gold paid $2.10. He was considered as the even money favourite.
The race had Drosselmeyer chasing Birdrun, in third position. Drosselmeyer then turned in the stretch, he had Birdrun, the soft pacer, Alma d’ Oro, and, Inherit the Gold racing on the outside.
Drosselmeyer got hold of the lead in the final turn, as he placed his head in front at the quarter pole after an opening of 1:39.59. The Quartet then raced together till the sixteenth pole. Alma d’ Oro, and, Inherit the Gold then backed out, leaving Drosselmeyer
running for the wire. He managed to outpace Birdrun and win the race.
His trainer Mott was very happy to see the colt perform this way, he commented by saying “Good to see Drosselmeyer back, he dug in today. He’s tough in the right kind of race. I was pleased with Birdrun too, he ran really well”.
This was Drosselmeyer’s first victory as a four year old since he won the Belmont Stakes in 2010. He enjoyed a three quarter length win at 13-1 odds. The 1 ½ mile distance race made Drosselmeyer pick up his second added money win of his career. Belmont Stakes
was last won by Lemon Drop Kid.
Drosselmeyer was sidelined from racing earlier because of an ankle problem. He ran twice in Florida since he ran in the Belmont Stakes.
Drosselmeyer was bred by Aaron U. Jones & Marie D. Jones. He had made two starts this year, as well, firstly, in the Challenger Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, which had the colt stand in fourth place.
The race took place on March 5, 2011. He had Luis Garcia, as his jockey in that race. He also participated in the Skip Away Stakes, in which he finished fifth. The grade 3 event was held at the Gulfstream Park on April 3, 2011. He had Garrett Gomez aboard
him in the race.
This victory was seen as a huge triumph by Drosselmeyer, and, it is expected that he will continue to make his fans happy by wins in other stakes as well. His trainer wants to race Drosselmeyer in the grade 2, $150,000 Brooklyn, which is to take place on
June 10, 2011.
