  1. Any opiate-based medication will give a positive for morphine - morphine is a breakdown product of opiates. Some opiates are: codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, dihydrocodiene, hydromorphone, oxymorphone, buprenorphine, etorphine, naloxone and nicomorphine. And obviously herion. Some of these opiates might be found in medication the person could be taking, e.g. pain medication. In theory, eating poppy seeds could give you a detectable amount of morphine, but in reality you'd have to eat quite a lot of seeds per day. It does happen though, e.g. in people who eat lots of seeded bread every day. Alternatively, it could be a false positive result - these tests aren't perfect and occasionally they are wrong.

  2. Opium comes from the seed of one species of poppy flowers, which happens to also be the species from which we get a lot of our food-based poppy seeds.  So sometimes if someone has eaten foods with poppy seeds, they will have a positive drug test.

  3. Faulty test

  4. Poppy seeds may cause this.
