Question:

Drums or a new guitar? Help!?

Hey guys,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma here; I can not decide if I should get a drumset and learn the drums or buy a new guitar, my budget is around $1400.

I have been playing the guitar for about 3 years now - on and off - on a $300 peavey electric guitar and I was thinking of picking up a nice Gibson Les paul or SG... however, I've always wanted to learn how to play the drums. My only concerns with the drums are volume, if they actually sound good without a band (solo) and they seem really confusing with all the cymbols, drums...etc.

So... should continue on the guitar or learn an entirely new instrument!

Thanks for your help!

  1. With that kind of money, you could get both. I say get a beginner drum set and a Gibson Les Paul Vintage Mahogany($900) or a Fender baja telecaster($800). Both of these are less than $1000 so you could still get a pretty decent drum set. There are so many great guitars you could get and still get a good drum set. You could also get an Epi Signature Zakk Wylde Les Paul.

  2. Think outside the box.  Get some African drums.  Easy to carry, no setup.  Cheap.  Sounds cool all alone or with a guitar group.  Listen to Andrew Bateman and Jay Ybarra's nuevo flamenco music.

  3. Hey

Being a guitarist of 2 years myself, this may seem a bit biased but this is just my opinion.

Stick with the guitar mate. I don't know how good you are at guitaring, but i say you should buy a new guitar and focus more on the instrument.

Buying a new drumsit and learning it, although it is good to try out new things, in this case i really wont recommend it.

Drums don't really sound that good on it's own, its more a band instrument. So unless you're playing in a band, drums really arnt for you.

Guitars however, theyre beauitful. They sound good on their own or with other instruments. You can play guitar and sing at the same time wheras with drums, you cant really sing along to.

Not saying drums are a c**p instrument, just saying gutiar > drums.

With guitar, theres more techniques and skills to learn and play with whilst with drumming its just smacking a couple of tom toms with 2 sticks.

Guitar is the way to go brother!

  4. Ive also been playing guitar for awhile also and as a solo instrument i would have to go with guitar. The only thing is guitars come in many different variety, and dont be sucked in by the name especially gibson. U probably kno this by now but u should tryout alot of guitars and be sure especially if ur gonna spend that much money. i personally use a $800 les paul epiphone and its great, but it all depends on what kind of music ur playing and ur own personal style.
