Dry Drowning?!?!?

Have you guys heard of this? Apparently it is possible for you son or daughter to drown any time during a 24 hour period well after swimming. It is caused from the chemicals in the water that your son or daughter digests.

Knowing this are you guys going to still allow your kids to swim? I dont have kids but when I do I dont think I'll be letting swim. Your thoughts?

  1. never heard of this...alot of pools are going to saltwater now...no chemicals... i dont think you should restrict your future children from swimming activities...you didnt dry drown... i didint dry drown...children need instruction on what to do and what not to do...

  2. i have never heard of that!

  3. I read this article and have to admit I was a little freaked out by it but if we all spent our lives avoiding the possiblity that we MAY be hurt it'd be a waste. I still let my kids swim and pray that they stay safe always.

FYI- it can happen in a bathtub too in smaller children, so its water in general that get into the lungs and causes the body to shut down due to reduced oxygen levels in the blood and to the brain.

  4. I just saw this on the news yesterday. Very scary. It happens when they swallow or really breathe in the water. It's very rare, but still a possibility. If I were a parent I might be more inclined to let them in the pool only when I am in there with them.

  5. I saw the video article, I think it was a very rare case. The child was in 4th grade and died about an hour after getting out of the water. It was too vague to tell what the cause was IMO--digestion problems, inhaled the water into the lungs?

I think it's really nothing to get worried about.

  6. I've never heard of that, but even if it's true I'll never go ahead and drink all the chlorine and chemicals inside the pool. Unless your kids open their mouths and swallow while they're swimming, chemicals soaked through the skin won't 'drown' them even if you constantly swim.

  7. I would make sure kids can swim. It could save their ives one day.

  8. Secondary drowning is common.  It is from digesting to much water and it fills their lungs.  just don't let the kids drink the water and they should be fine.
