Question:

Dry mouth during running race?

My mouth is moist hours before the running race and I believe I'm hydrated but about an hour before the race I get a dry mouth. Could it be because I'm nervous? I try to drink more water before the race to see if it will make my mouth moist but it doesn't seem to work. During the race it gets even worse. It feels like I have a cotton mouth or some may say parched mouth. What should I do to stop this?

  1. the same thing happens to me the thing that helps me best is to breath in from my nose out to my mouth for the firdt two laps and the last two laps i pick it up by breathing in and out of my mouth

  2. Your body is dehydrated. Be sure to drink plenty of water, gatorade, juice ect. for the the day before and the the day of your race. Starting to Drink right before the race is to late; start the day before by carrying a water bottle with you and sip from it throughout the day. Try to drink at least 2-3 bottles, the day before in addition to your regular fluid consumption.  You'll know when you have had enough to drink when your urine is pale yellow to clear.

Try it and see if it works.

  3. May sound crazy but its worked for me for yrs., put 2 or 3 peppermint candies in your mouth, don't suck on them just let leave them in the sides........promise you won't get cotton mouth!!

  4. oh god. yes i have the same problem. i drink about 2 bottles of water the day of a race and i still get that horrible cotton mouth and can barely breath cuz my mouth is so dry. try chewing gum before you run it helps alittle. but thats the best solution i have found so far.

    good luck!
