Dry scratchy watery eye with crust in the morning?

Does anyone have a problem with a constant watery eye that gets scratchy and then when you wake up you have to pry your eye open? Is it allergies? Why one eye? This has been constant for at least a month. It seems to get better when it rains. It also re-occurs throughout the year but mostly in the summer.

Sounds more like an infection than an allergy. Allergies make the eye water but not normally sticky, plus anti-histamine drops should have cleared it up for you. Try an antibiotic drop for 1 week (follow the instructions on the label), if no improvement see an optician and let them check for you.

Angela - I have that same problem (watery eyes with crust in the morning) from time to time.  I have sinus problems and allergies, but I think that my eyes are just irritated (dust, pollution and I have a bad habit of rubbing my eyes when I'm tired).

The eye drops may help, but what really helps is just rinsing my eyes out every morning when I wake up, before bed and whenever my eyes feel scratchy (sometimes every hour on the hour) with either Eye Wash ($5 in your local drugstore and comes with an eye wash cup) or plain water.   After doing this for a few days my eyes are clear in the mornings.

Just an FYI - Natural tears are saline (have salt) and plain water can make your eyes feel drier if you rinse them too much.  I make up my own saline solution with 8 ounces of plain water and 1/8 teaspoon of NON-IODONIZED salt.  Eye Wash has preservatives (to keep it sterile) and if used too often can be very irritating (the preservatives in Eye Wash, like the preservatives in eye drops) can make your eyes REALLY STING.
