Question:

Dry socket after 24 hours?

I had tooth removed a week ago and developed dry socket within 24 hours, the pain is awful. Dentist packed the hole and gave anti biotoics. Should it not be healed after a week, if not how long till it does. Main pain is the roof of mouth at the front where extraction was and the teeth at either side. Thought I'd be okay by now!!

  1. this is as bad as it gets, the pain is unbearable, couple of weeks, but you might need more atibiotics

  2. JOHN,

IF A DRY SOCKET WILL FORM IT'S 24-48 HOURS AFTER EXTRACTION. IT TAKES SEVERAL WEEKS FOR IT TO HEAL.

REMEMBER THIS IS OPEN RAW BONE IN THE MOUTH. THIS REQUIRED TIME TO HEAL.

  3. one week isnt enough for sure for a dry socket, though pain should be decreased by time, u need another week to eliminate pain, and 2-3 months for complete healing (no pain in the hole 2 months), it needs patience

  4. Man, do I feel for you.  I had one with a wisdom tooth extraction.  It took almost a month for the pain to go away.  The hole has to fill in with flesh, and that will take time.  They gave me clove oil and some kind of surgical tape that was soaked in it and I changed it out a couple of times a day.  That stuff worked better than the pain pills.

Best of luck to you, it isn't fun.

  5. I would go back and see your dentist again to clarify your questions, but it does take longer in the healing procress after dry socket occurs.  My husband was dealing with the gums growing back over for a few weeks.  The pain should be decreasing slowly.

Dry sockets slow down the healing procress quite a bit.
