Dryer eletrical wire?

I am wanting to move my dryer to another wall so that the vent reachs the outside vent hole. What size electrical wire is needed to move the plug?? Also is it safe do attach the old wire coming from the wall with the new wire (if I attach it is a juction box and use the plastic caps and electric tape?) Or would it be better just to run new wire from the electrical box to the new location? Right now the wire comes out of a brick wall so I am not sure how easy it would be to track it back to the box that is why I just wanted to use a junction box and splice them together.

  1. You pose a difficult question! You are evidently not an experienced electrician/diyer. Working with 220v is not for the novice..Contact an electrician, pick his brain, get specifics on materials and procedures then decide if you want to do it on your own.    BE SAFE!

  2. i would think about an electrician..   however to track the wires back to the box, just start at the box. look inside and the 220 lines will be the only breaker with 2 switches hooked together.   whatever wires are behind and attached to the system is your 220 line (it's actually two 110 lines)

run a brand new line and don't use a junction box for a 220 line.  make sure you shut the power off at the first box coming in.   kill all power to the house. use your old 220 receptacle so your sure to have the right configuration for the dryer plug.

they're not all the same design.

    good luck to ya

  3. Hi..........You need a 10/3 but turn off your power first and open the outlet...............do not do this if you do not have a tester to test it. Get some help.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Safety First.

    Hire a qualified electrician

  5. most electric dryers need #12 wire and it is alright to use wire nuts and tape as long as the wire nuts are the correct size and after the connection is made a solid cover is put on the old outlet plug box

  6. there is no problem with using the old dryer box as a junction box if you make good connections
