When drying a sunflower, do you hang it upside down to dry, or do you remove the seeds from the plant and dry it that way?

  1. Tie a piece of cheesecloth or fine nylon or plastic mesh around the ripening sunflower seedhead when the back portion of the head begins to turn brown.

Once the head shrivels and the seeds are dry, you can just rub them into the covering.

    See source for more details

  2. I hang them upside down to dry out then shake them

  3. allow the flower to wilt and the seeds to develope on the the stalk.

cut the head off once the petals have mostly fallen off the the seeds are hard and tan/brown.

You can just leave it out for a week, or bring it in so the birds don't get the seeds.
