Question:

Drywall Sanding?

I just put a piece of 4 x 4 drywall on my ceiling. When I was cutting the hole I was 1/8 of an inch off. The one edge is not flush with the rest of the ceiling and there is a slight gap of 1/8 of an inch. Also the corner doesn't seem to go flat with the ceiling. Can I apply mud/joint compound and then sand it down so its smooth and flush?

  1. Were the corner doesn't flatten out there is some paper or a nail or something that will not allow it to stay straight. You will be better of to find out what it is and remove it if you can, if you have already nailed it to well to remove, place a board over the hump and knock it down with a hammer. Then with this corrected, bed some paper tape with a coat of joint compound. You also need to tape all your joints, let them dry til they are bright white. Then put a skim coat over that and fan it out farther. Then you may either sand (careful not to rough up the paper) or wipe the joints down with a wet sponge or wet cloth.I would then apply a 3rd coat to skim the joints and make them unnoticeable.( I always fan out a joint about 1 foot on both sides.) Then prime with drywall primer. If there are imperfections, you can touch them up at this time. Then finish with your desired paint or texture.

  2. The gaps are no problem, but you will want/need to take the hump out of the replacement panel before you mud it in. Otherwise, you will be able to see the hump when you are done.
