  1. Me and your are on the same level, i just started photography too. I have a nikon d40, which is a good camera, but i wouldn't suggest it, it's a good camera. You say you have a budget, but you didn't tell us what it is. You're talking about the rebel xsi, which is a fortune in and of itself. So can i assume your budget is like 850$ or close to it ?:P

Yes, the rebel xsi is a great camera, it's one of the newest digital single lens reflex cameras, it was released back in april, which wasn't to long ago when you think of it really.

The rebel xsi has a three inch screen, which is almost un-heard of on starter single lens reflex cameras.  Then, it has twelve megapixels, more than the 40d, 12 megapixels is alot, and shoudln't be taken likely, you can get some real good shots. It takes the look of a canon eos 20d, it doesn't look that much like the 400d anymore. The rebel xsi is a really nice camera, and anyone should be happy to have one,  heck, i wish i did :p

that's the link for the xsi, you should get it from there, thats where you're going to get it for the best price

Another camera that should be on the ogenda is the nikon d60, another up and coming digital singles lens reflex camera. It just came out, and is about 650$, with the VR 18-55mm lens, the xsi comes with a IS 18-55mm lens too.

Note: Is, And Vr mean the same thing, they slow down your movement to stabilize an image, they just don't want to use the same word for it hehe. The nikon d60 has a two and a half inch screen, dust cleaning system, ten megapixels, and all. It's not as good as the rebel xsi, but if you want to save some money, that's the camera you're going to want to get.

that's the link for the d60, you should like what you see:P

  2. The 450D aka XSi, is an excellent entry level camera, with the IS lens that comes with the camera, you're off to a good start.  The 440D uses SD memory cards which are pretty inexpensive (I'd suggest getting 2- 4gb cards), and a UV filter for your camera, along with an extra battery, and a case twice as large, as you think you'll need,  you'll grow into the case, as you add gear.  Another necessary item is a good tripod, which will support 5+ lbs, as you'll want to grow into that as well, as you add gear.

Another lens is a good idea, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 is a gem of a lens, at about $80, it's a great buy and sharp as a tack, a great lens to learn with.

  3. Contrary to popular belief, there are actually other DSLR cameras available. IMO, before you buy any camera, you should at least look at the Sony A200, A300 and A350 and the Pentax K200D and K20D.

    Happy camera comparing!

  4. I like the pentax's too. In body shake reduction, dust removal, metal mount kit lens, best rated kit lens (www.dpreview.com) and the only system where all cameras currently offered are completely weather sealed. If your in the USA, after rebate it's around same price as nikon D60 and Canon Rebel XTi.

  5. ohh photography!

I have the 450d aka the xti.. and love it..

I think thats the best for starters.. and definitely stay with canon

Nikons good too.. but more things are capable with canon.

    Hope your photography goes good!

ohhh! you should get a flickr to display your pictures. :)

  6. 450D is definately a good start, but if your budget allows try get one that comes with a double lens kit, ie. an 18-55mm lens (the standard one) and a 70-200mm or a 70-300mm lens.

It will cost you a little less to buy all three in one go (camera + 2 lenses) than to buy an extra lense at a later stage.

I personally wish I could afford this camera or a Nikon equivalent, but they are so costly in South Africa!
